Description
This Stanley #4C could use a good cleaning. The japanning in the bed is about 95% there, with the usual small amount of flaking around the toe and heel. The rosewood knob and tote have no breaks or chips, but the knob has some odd abrasions that are difficult to describe — see the photos. Both wooden parts are covered with a lacquer finish that flakes in weird ways — I’ve seen this before on a few planes of this type. The type studies don’t mention it, but clearly Stanley was experimenting with finishes at some point. Plenty of cutter left.
