Description
Patented by George Mills and Jackson Hanscom of Boston in 1862; US Patent #35885 dated July 15, 1862. Apparently manufactured by the Connecticut Arms Company between 1863 and 1869. Little is known about this company.
The nail-holding device consists of a v-shaped track cast into the head, and designed to hold the head of a nail while it is started. This example has some small chips around the edges of the striking face, and a couple more on the claws. The handle appears original.
