Description
Not much is known about the Bailey Tool Company of Sag Harbor, NY, but rumor has it that they were in business from around 1875 until 1896 or so. This corner chisel appears to be very well made, and well-kept to boot — the edges are in good shape. There’s over seven inches left to the shoulder, so unless you’re a timber framer with a long career ahead of you, this will last a lifetime.
One puzzler, though — the handle appears to be the original, fits the socket perfectly, and has the iron hoop used to keep the handle from mushrooming under heavy pounding. That said, the *socket* is mushroomed from heavy pounding. I can’t quite figure out why somebody would take the handle out of the socket and then pound the piss out of the thing, but so be it.
