Description

[Before reading further, look at the page on generic tools.  The picture you see here is representative  — it is unlikely to be the one you’ll receive.]

The North Bros. “Yankee” screwdriver,  later made by Stanley after they bought North out, is an amazingly useful and versatile screwdriver.  In terms of portability, it’s a precursor of the battery-powered screw gun.  Pumping on the handle causes the bit to turn either forward or in reverse, and it develops quite a bit of torque.   Very useful for any number of repetitive screwdriving tasks; I know of computer builders who use them to assemble cases, and drapery and window shade technicians who use them to install drapery hardware.  You can also buy 1/4″ hex drives  for them that permit use with any modern bit or (with a square-drive socket adapter) socket wrench.  A very versatile and useful tool.

Any example I sell will be fully functional.  It may be missing the return spring — that’s a feature. Most were removed by owners who rightly feared that the spring would result in damaged work or damaged workers — the spring is quite powerful, and if you’ve ever shot yourself with one you won’t forget it (I haven’t).   Typical defects include worn paint on the handle and rubbed off nickel.  All will have one bit; none will have the 3 it was originally sold with.  You can buy replacement bits from several sellers online.

Smaller Yankees are sold individually.
