Description
Stewart was a well-known Edinburgh planemaker from 1797 to 1848. This one has the “script” maker’s mark.
Actually, not completely sure if it’s a table plane or not, because the radius of the cut is quite small, perhaps a 1/4 inch or so. But it does look like it was made to cut the male side of a rule joint on the edge of something about 3/8″ thick.
Plane is in excellent condition for something 172 years old. An earlier owner added a very thin strip to the fence, likely to adjust the behavior of the rule joint for the better. A curious and intriguing object.
